Valdaora/Olang at the Fanes – Sennes – Prags nature park (Fanes- Senes-Braies)
Valdaora/Olang is situated in the Upper Puster Valley at an altitude of
1,050 metres. It is surrounded by the
Valdaora/Olang and Prags Dolomite mountains in the south and the
Rieserferner group of mountains in the north. Lavishly green meadows, wide Alpine pastures, dense forests, as well as rocks and the rugged peaks of the bizarre Dolomite mountains dominate the landscape. The village has approximately 3,000 inhabitants and it consists of four districts: Oberolang, Mitterolang, Niederolang and Geiselsberg.
Valdaora/Olang and its valleys
Valdaora/Olang is situated in the heart of the Puster Valley! Its central location offers our visitors the possibility to reach all of its seven side valleys fast and comfortably.
The Braies/Prags Valley with the Braies/Prags Wild Lake and the Prato Piazza/Plätzwiese are definitely worth a visit. The
Casies/Gsieser Valley is extremely idyllic and offers original Alpine huts, the Gsiers Folk Race and a lot of nature all around. The Ladin culture, the birthplace of the China missionary Saint Freinademetz, the Sella Ronda and the beauty of the Alta Badia can be enjoyed in the
Gader Valley. The
Anterselva/Antholz Valley is popular due to its biathlon centre and the Anterselva/Antholz Lake. Farming culture and the Prettau Mining Museum can be seen in the
Ahrn Valley. An Olympic feeling and the modern world can be experienced in
Cortina. Along the
Puster Valley, from the Mühlbach hermitage to the frontiers of East Tyrol, there are numerous romantic villages, Brunico/Bruneck town, the famous Tre Cime/Drei Zinnen and a variety of other destination well worth seeing.
Culture & tradition in Valdaora/Olang
In Valdaora/Olang, tradition and culture are high on the list of priorities and are actively practised every day. This is particularly visible during church processions, the Parish Day (locally called the ‘Kirschta‘) and during the annual Alpine cattle drive.
Things worth seeing in Valdaora/Olang
In the park directly adjacent to Hotel Olaga, there is the
monument to Peter Sigmair, who fought in the army of Andreas Hofer during the war of liberty in 1899. He is also remembered in the
Peter Sigmayr memorial chapel. Do not forget to visit the
parish church in Niederolang, the
sulphur spring in Bagni di Pervalle/Bad Bergfall, the burning lime stone and the
“Peststöckl” (pestilence monument) on the road to Geiselberg. During the summer, culinary delights are offered at the
‘Standlschmaus snack bar, the Weinbeben and the
‘Gaumenfreuden im Park’ (gourmet delights in the park).
